What is Shakespeare Quarterly?
SQ is a refereed scholarly journal published for the Folger Shakespeare Library by Johns Hopkins University Press, with support from George Washington University. SQ is committed to publishing articles in the vanguard of Shakespeare studies, notes that bring to light new information on Shakespeare and his age, issue and exchange sections on the latest research and debates, theater reviews of significant Shakespeare productions, and book reviews to keep readers current with Shakespeare criticism and scholarship.
The first issue of Shakespeare Quarterly appeared in 1950, but the journal traces its publication history back another 24 years to 1936. Between 1936 and 1950, SQ was known as The Shakespeare Association Bulletin and was published by the Shakespeare Association of America. More than 2,100 individuals and institutions in 42 countries subscribe to SQ.

In July 2009, Dr. David Schalkwyk became Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly and head of the Research Division of the Folger Shakespeare Library. He comes to the Folger from the University of Cape Town, where he recently completed a term as Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Humanities. His publications include Shakespeare, Love, and Service (2008), Literature and the Touch of the Real (2004), and Speech and Performance in Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Plays (2002).

McManaway, the eminent scholar who guided the journal from 1951 through 1972. The first volume of SQ was edited by Dr. Robert M. Smith.
