Digital Collection FAQs

What's in the Digital Collection?

The Folger's Digital Image Collection offers online access to over 20,000 high-resolution images from the Folger Shakespeare Library collection, including books, theater memorabilia, manuscripts, art, and more.

Do I have to install Luna Insight to search the Digital Image Collection?

No, you can access the images through Browser Insight using your favorite web browser, with pop-up blocking turned off. However some features are available only through download and installation of Luna Insight , such as the ability to view entire pre-1640 quarto editions.

Can I install Luna Insight on a Mac?

Yes, Luna Insight is compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems.

What if I don't want to install anything? Will Browser Insight work with any Web Browser?

Current browsers are supported, as long as pop-up blockers are not in use. Many legacy browsers should work as well.

How do I search for images?

Some images are accompanied by Hamnet records which describe the entire item, not the specific portion photographed. In most cases only abbreviated data records are provided. A search by "keyword" is often the best place to start. Also, although Browser Insight will show you only 20 thumbnails at a time, if you download and install Luna Insight, you can browse through up to 250 thumbnails at a time by changing the number in "collection paging size" in the bottom right corner of the screen. Thumbnail browsing can be a great way to explore our content without having to enter search terms.
