Folger Shakespeare Library holds copyright to the images it produces of the library’s collection. Written permission and payment of a fee is required for publication of these images. Permission is granted for one time, one edition, one publication, one broadcast, one digital press run, or one website use only. Further use requires separate application. No permission fee is required for images to be used for research purposes only.

Copyrighted material will not be reproduced without signed permission from the copyright owner. Such authorization must be obtained by the applicant for photography work and must cover the specific use to be made of the copyright material.

No permission is required to quote excerpts from items in the collection within the bounds of "fair use."

Except for classroom use, images from the Folger website are to be used for reference only and may not be reproduced without written permission from the Folger Shakespeare Library. Users are not permitted to download text and images to mount on their own servers for public or commercial use, or for use by a set of subscribers without written permission. Links are welcome subject to these conditions of use.

How to Obtain Permission to Publish
To request permission to publish, please use the application for permission to publish. . Please fill it out completely and fax or mail it to the Photography Department.

  • We require a signature on the form.
  • If your request exceeds 2 items, an attached list is acceptable.
  • The Folger distinguishes between two types of publication: commercial and non-commercial. Non-commercial publication is for non-profit [501(c)(3)] organizations only. All other publications are considered commercial.
  • See our list of publication fees  for information about our fee structure.

Once we receive your application form, we will send you a written letter of permission and an invoice for the fee. Proper attribution is required. Unless otherwise specified, published images should be accompanied by the attribution "By permission of the Folger Shakespeare Library."
