Folger Undergraduate Program

Paster Reading Room

The Folger Shakespeare Library launched an Undergraduate Program in 2007 under the direction of Dr. Sarah Werner. The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation supported the launch of the program with planning grants. The George Washington University co-sponsored the earliest offerings of semester seminars. Georgetown University has also sponsored an annual seminar. In collaboration with Amherst College, the Folger also hosts an intensive January program for Amherst undergraduates.

The semester seminars meet weekly at the Library under the direction of Folger professional staff. Students learn basic archival research skills, are introduced to the field of book history, and pursue advanced independent research on early modern topics. With visits from Folger staff and guest faculty, the seminar provides a wide-ranging, materials-based introduction to the methods and topics of current research in early modern studies.

In the summer of 2013, the program moves into the ambit of the Folger Institute, the Folger’s dedicated center for advanced research in the humanities.
