High School Fellowship Program

Explore Shakespeare’s plays as a scholar, actor, and audience member!

Applications for the 2014 High School Fellowship Program are due by Friday, May 16.

In the fall:

This fall semester, interdisciplinary seminar—led by noted scholars and theater practitioners —provides Fellows with the chance to investigate a wide range of approaches and theories to the study of Shakespeare and the humanities. The program includes attention to history and all aspects of the plays themselves through academic seminars, practical theater work, work in the Folger collection, and theater performances.

2014 High School Fellows meet every Monday from 3:45 pm to 6:00 pm to examine the period, humanities in general, and selected plays—based in part by what is being performed at area theaters—from several different viewpoints, including textual interpretation (including the social and historical contexts in which the plays were written), stage history, and practical concerns of theater. Fellows work with curators, scholars, directors, and actors, have the opportunity to work in the Folger collection, and see professional theater performances of the plays being studied.

Student responsibilities include reading plays and related material each week, a research essay and a final acting project.

Who Can Apply:
Rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from public, parochial, and independent high schools, as well as homeschooled students, in the Washington, DC area are eligible. Applicants should have a strong interest in literature, history, or drama in general—and Shakespeare in particular (although previous knowledge is not a requirement). All interested students are encouraged to apply.

Costs:

All Fellows are awarded full scholarships. Additional McManaway Fellowship funds may be available for students with after-school jobs or who have major transportation challenges.

The Application:
Sixteen participants are selected on the basis of their answers to application questions, especially an essay describing their reasons for wanting to participate in the program, and on their recommendations from two teachers, one of whom should be an English teacher. Students may also be asked to come to the Folger for a brief interview. Click on the links at right to download an application, course description, and information flyer.

Applications for the 2014 High School Fellowship Program are due by Friday, May 16, 2014. Students will be informed of their application status on or before Friday, May 30.

Sponsoring Teacher:
Each participant must designate a sponsoring teacher from their school to whom the student informally reports during the semester.

Academic Credit:
Folger Shakespeare Library is not a credit-granting institution, but many Fellows' schools have chosen to give course credit in English, theater, or independent study.
