Shakespeare for a New Generation brings Folger's performance-based approach to teaching Shakespeare directly to teachers and students in grades 7 through 12 in selected public schools.
Working closely with you and your students, our teaching artists help students of all learning styles and multiple intelligences find their own points of entry into Shakespeare's language and plays.
The program culminates in the students participating in the Secondary Schools Festival on the Folger stage with other schools from throughout the Washington area.
In addition to Festival participation, SFANG program includes:
- Fifteen classroom visits. Led by Folger Teaching Artists, these sessions get students on their feet and comfortable with the language as they discuss and rehearse their play.
- Attendance at a Student Matinee of the Folger production of Julius Caesar.
In addition, SFANG offers two professional development opportunities for participating teachers and teaching artists. An opening and closing workshop will introduce and reinforce performance-based techniques for all areas of humanities study, and acquaint you with the Festival playing space.
The program—including teaching artist fees, transportation, and related instructional materials—is provided to selected schools at no cost.
