A Prompt Book is a three ring binder that contains all of the information about your performance. It contains the script with all the blocking and cues notated. Typically the Stage Manager keeps "The Book" and uses it to call the show. For younger students or groups that do not have a stage manager, the director or teacher should be responsible for maintaining this book.

The Prompt Book also contains contact information, lists of props, rehearsal notes, etc. A production can be recreated from the information in the Prompt Book.
Separated by tab dividers, the Prompt Book should contain the following:
-
Production script
-
Entrance and Exit Flow Chart – list the actors on stage in each scene and act
-
Cast Contact Sheet – listing all personnel connected with the production including parent volunteers
-
The original or copies of the audition forms
-
A production calendar – listing the due date of all activity connected with the production
-
Prop/Set Piece list
-
Lighting/sound cue list
-
Copy of the ground plan
-
Costume plot
-
Extra paper for notes
Actors can also keep a Prompt Book. An actor’s prompt book would contain the script with blocking notations, a rehearsal schedule/calendar, pertinent information with regards to the character s/he is portraying, and extra pages for notes.
