2008 Shakespeare Steward Award

Peggy O'Brien

Folger Shakespeare Library presented the 2008 Shakespeare Steward Award to author and educator Peggy O’Brien. Dr. O’Brien is the founder of the Folger’s Teaching Shakespeare Institute and initiated the groundbreaking education series, Shakespeare Set Free. The award was presented to Dr. O'Brien by the first Shakespeare Steward Award recipient, Susan Biondo-Hench, at the Teaching Shakespeare Institute on July 18, 2008.

Dr. O’Brien began the Folger’s Teaching Shakespeare Institute, a four-week residential program on Shakespeare education that connects educators with scholars, theater professionals, and master teachers, in 1984. Dr. O’Brien is also the editor of the Shakespeare Set Free series, books that have profoundly influenced the way Shakespeare is taught in American classroom.

Dr. O’Brien is an active contributor to Shakespeare scholarship and education. In 2007, she spoke at the Folger Institute conference “Shakespeare in American Education 1607-1934.” Audio clips from an interview with Dr. O’Brien on “learning by doing,” a classroom approach that unites teaching and performance, are featured on the Shakespeare in American Life website.

After serving as the Folger’s first Head of Education, Dr. O’Brien was the senior vice president for educational programming and services for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. She is currently director of communications for District of Columbia Public Schools.
