Macbeth Film Screening
Friday, November 20
7:30pm
Experience a visionary, “horrorshow” production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth through a filmed performance of Folger Theatre’s acclaimed 2008 production directed by Teller (of Penn & Teller) and Aaron Posner. The New York Times called the production “a knockout,” and The Wall Street Journal raved “This riveting Macbeth ought to be seen by as many people as possible.” With special features for classroom use—including director interviews, commentary from cast and crew, a behind-the-scenes look at stage combat, and more—this Macbeth is one you’ll remember.
Teachers Set Free: Lessons Learned from Shakespeare Education at the Folger
Saturday, November 21st
11:00am–12:15pm
Since 1984, the Folger Shakespeare Library has been at the forefront of Shakespeare education for all students. The philosophy of Folger education is deeply rooted in the belief that all students can understand and appreciate Shakespeare's work. We believe that performance-based instruction is the most effective method for providing students with direct experiences and insights into literature. This interactive session will highlight some of the most recent lessons and instructional strategies learned and developed from the summer Teaching Shakespeare Institutes and the three volumes of Shakespeare Set Free. Participants will receive ideas and materials they can use in their classrooms on Monday morning and beyond.
Teaching Shakespeare to the Class of 2020
Saturday, November 21
4:15–5:30pm
Getting students to be content creators rather than consumers has become the goal of the Folger Library's education philosophy. Having students perform scenes from the plays is one way to do this; the creative use of low-cost technology offers another. This session will demonstrate some cutting-edge activities to turn your Shakespeare unit into a dynamic, exciting experience, including the technical requirements and skills, sources for legal music and sound effects, and the educational potential of digitally putting Shakespeare into the creative hands of the students.
