Thanks to the joint efforts of Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Chicago Public Schools, each year over 50,000 students in the Chicago area are introduced to Shakespeare's work with innovative teaching strategies, performances, and free workshops for teachers under the umbrella of CST's Team Shakespeare programming.
Since 1991, Team Shakespeare has served over 1 million students and teachers with professional performances, touring "Short Shakespeare" performances in schools, and performance opportunities. Additionally, Chicago Public Schools teachers have been given access to free professional development workshops which offer practical reading strategies for their classrooms, connecting the page to the stage with their students. CPS Shakespeare!, a cornerstone of CST's educational programming, brings students and their teachers to the Chicago Shakespeare Courtyard Theatre annually to perform adaptations of Shakespeare's work together.
For these programs and their dedication to fostering a practical love of Shakespeare in public schools, we are pleased to award ths Shakespeare Steward Award to Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Chicago Public Schools.
