William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon. After spending much of his career in London, he died in Stratford on April 23, 1616.
In November 1582, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. When they married, he was eighteen and she was 26. They had three children—Susanna and twins Judith and Hamnet.

The inscription on the stone beneath his monument reads:
GOOD FREND FOR JESUS SAKE FORBEARE,
TO DIGG THE DUST ENCLOASED HEARE:
BLESTE BE Ye MAN Yt [that] SPARES THES STONES,
AND CURST BE HE Yt MOVES MY BONES.
