Open Captioning
Open captioning makes live theatre performances accessible for the estimated 30 million audience members in the United States who are hard of hearing and deaf. By using a non-intrusive caption board at the front of the stage which scrolls the entire text of the production, open captioning provides enjoyment for audience members who are not self-identified as hard of hearing or who merely wish to catch a missed word or phrase. The "passive assistance" nature of open captioning allows patrons to enjoy captioning discretely, as part of the general audience without requiring special equipment or knowledge of American Sign Language.
Folger Theatre offers one open-captioned performance—the 2pm performance on the 5th Sunday of the run—for each of its productions. Call the Folger Box Office at (202) 544-7077 for additional information.
