The Play's the Thing



A 4-Week Seminar on The Taming of the Shrew


The Folger Institute’s Center for Shakespeare Studies and Folger Theatre have partnered to present The Play’s the Thing,a new seminar series. Directed by Folger Shakespeare Library scholars, the four-session seminars include in-depth readings of selected plays from Folger Theatre’s current season, examination of textual and performance histories, and a discussion with cast members about the choices and approaches of the Folger production.

The Play’s the Thing: THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

 

Seminar director:  David Schalkwyk, Director of Research at the Folger Shakespeare Library and editor of Shakespeare Quarterly. He is the author of Speech and Performance in Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Plays (2002) and Shakespeare, Love, and Service (2008) and formerly a Professor of English and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Cape Town.

 

Dates and times:  Thursdays April 26, May 3, May 10, and May 17 from 6pm to 7pm

 

Cost: $120 for Folger subscribers and Folger members ($150 for non-subscribers and non-members), which includes a copy of the Folger Shakespeare Library edition of The Taming of the Shrew. Tickets to Folger Theatre’s production of The Taming of the Shrew are not included in the registration fee, though seminar participants are encouraged to see the play.

 

Registration: Please print and complete the registration form and return to the Folger Shakespeare Library no later than Sunday, April 15, 2012.
