Adopt a New Acquisition

Funding St Paul's Cathedral

Great Britain. Act for the finishing and adorning the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul’s, London. London, 1702

Adopt for: $250

Queen Anne, (1665–1714). At the Parliament begun at Westminster the twentieth day of August, Anno Dom. 1702. In the first year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Anne. London: Printed by Charles Bill, 1702.

In the first year of her reign, Queen Anne issued this act to raise funds needed for the completion of St Paul's Cathedral. The 1666 Great Fire of London destroyed 4/5ths of London including most of St Paul's Cathedral. Christopher Wren was appointed "Surveyor of Works" in 1669 and tasked with the construction of a new cathedral. The first stone was laid in 1675 and the cathedral completed in 1711. St Paul's is a significant place for the national identity of the English people. Sitting at the highest point in the city, it is a Church of England cathedral, and the dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on the site, founded in 604.
