Prize Victorian Shakespeare

Shakespeare. The Dramatic works of William Shakespeare. Edinburgh and London, 1871

Adopt for: $750

William Shakespeare, 1564–1616. The Dramatic Works… with copious glossarial notes… Edinburgh and London: Gall and Inglis, [1871].

This Victorian edition of Shakespeare was presented as a prize to fifteen-year-old John Evelyn Barlas from the Merchant Taylors’ School in 1876. A number of his annotations comment on the poetry, morality, or political implications of the text. For example, he notes that Romeo and Juliet shows “how love can make a simple girl crafty in defence of her lover,” but he also characterizes a couple of Romeo’s comments as “a few socialist remarks from the so-called aristocratic Shakespeare.” Barlas (1860–1914) was a friend of Oscar Wilde at Oxford, and became a writer of decadent verse and a political anarchist.
