My king dog

Anne, Queen, consort of James I. Autograph letter signed "Anna R" to the future Duke of Buckingham. Manuscript, 1617
Adopt for: $4,000

Queen Anne, consort of James I, King of England, 1574–1619. Autograph letter signed from Queen Anne (wife of James I) to George Villiers, future Duke of Buckingham, [late summer, 1617].
Queen Anne signs her name “Anna R[egina]” at the top of this letter to her husband’s favorite, the Duke of Buckingham, whom she addresses affectionately as “My king dog.” The letter, a request that she not be required to meet her husband at Woodstock because the journey is “farre and incommodious,” is filled with signs of her love for Buckingham: the fermesse symbol ($) on the address panel and the end of most lines, the pink silk floss under the seal, the folding pattern of the letter itself, and the fact that it is written in her own hand, all indicate that Buckingham is an intimate friend.
