Adopt a New Acquisition

The Devil comes to Dinner

Paris, 1622

Adopt for: $4,000

This little play – really more comic than tragic – was designed to be performed at Purim, the feast celebrating Esther’s rescue of the Jews in Persia. In one of the added comic scenes, a devil comes to eat at Haman’s house because of insufficient food in Hell. The whole play is more secular than religious, depicting Haman as a victim of Fortune rather than God’s punishment. It was printed in the shop of a woman, the Widow Ducarroy.
