Gabriel Lebrun’s allegorical representations of Morning, Noon, Afternoon, and Night are particularly interesting to the Folger because they have captions in French and in English. This implies that they were not only marketed in England, but marketed to non-elite purchasers who wouldn’t be able to read French as a matter of course.
