Adopt a New Acquisition

The Florence Foster Jenkins of his day?

The Gay Lothario. The Great and Celebrated Amateur of Fashion. Print, 1813

Adopt for: $400

William Elmes, flourished 1804–1816. The Gay Lothario, the Great and Celebrated Amateur of Fashion. London: Thomas Tegg, 1813.

Wealthy dilettante Robert Coates (1772–1848) fancied himself an actor, despite his painfully bad performances. Mockingly called “Romeo Coates” thanks to his disastrous 1810 debut in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, he took starring roles in self-financed performances and gave the proceeds to charity. Among other things, he was known for not wanting to get his fine clothes dirty, making death scenes like the one shown here (Lothario in Nicholas Rowe's The Fair Penitent) particularly awkward.
