Way to Heaven

Romeyn de Hooghe. Sic itur ad astra scilicet. Print, 1689

Adopt for: $650

Romeyn de Hooghe, 1645–1708. Sic itur ad astra scilicet. Etching, 1688.

“This is the way to heaven, of course” reads the title of this anti-Catholic satire against Sir Edward Petre (1633?–1699), a Jesuit priest and courtier of James II. Vanity, Envy, Gluttony, and other allegorical representations of sins fill the room. “William Loggan f: & Oxonia, Anno 1681” is a false signature.
