Imagining China: The View from Europe, 1550–1700

Early modern Europeans imagined China as a land of wonder, of riches, and of enormous opportunity. Rare books and maps from the Folger collection, along with items from the Library of Congress and the Walters Arts Museum, capture England's dawning cultural awareness and admiration of things Chinese.

Elizabethan Garden Tour

Folger Elizabethan Garden

Garden tours are offered at 10am and 11am on the third Saturday of each month, April through October.
The Elizabethan Garden is open year-round, Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and before most Folger performances.

Explore our garden, inspired by herbal references in Shakespeare's plays and also incorporating plants popular in his time, including lavender, creeping thyme, and English ivy; a knot garden; and Shakespearean statues by American sculptor Greg Wyatt. Folger docents offer insights into plantings, Elizabethan customs, and more.

A Harmony of Friends: Music of Italy and China

The Folger Consort and guest artists perform Italian and Chinese music circa 1610, including song and brilliant instrumental music by Francesca Caccini (the first woman to compose an opera), Sigismundo d’India, Biagio Marini, and others, along with music from China performed by a guest virtuoso pipa (Chinese lute) player.

O.B. Hardison, Jr. Poetry Prize: Juliana Spahr

Spahr, an associate professor of English at Mills College, reads from her work and is awarded the Hardison Poetry Prize for her body of work and her teaching.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie & Fae Myenne Ng

Nigerian author Adichie wrote Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun, a New York Times Notable Book. Chinese-American author Ng’s first novel, Bone, was a 1994 PEN/Faulkner Award finalist. The authors read from their latest works.
