Discover how staging Shakespeare’s plays has changed over the past 400 years.  More than 100 items—scripts and promptbooks, designs for sets, lights, and costumes, props, models, production photographs, playbills, letters, and reviews— highlight broad shifts over the centuries in the performances of Othello, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the sometimes surprising changes made to the plays.

Three-time Helen Hayes award-winning director Aaron Posner leads an outstanding ensemble, including Erin Weaver (Arcadia and The Comedy of Errors) as Juliet, Michael Goldsmith (Clybourne Park in London’s West End) as Romeo, and Eric Hissom (Arcadia, Macbeth, and Cyrano) as Friar Lawrence, into the heart of this powerful, provocative play.

RSC Live from Stratford–upon–Avon: Richard II  CLOSED

The Folger hosts a special preview screening of the first ever live cinema broadcast from the stage of the RSC, captured from Shakespeare's hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. Directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran and starring David Tennant as Richard II.

PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story: George Saunders  CLOSED

The PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story. The 2013 PEN/Malamud Award will be presented to George Saunders, who will read from the Folger stage. A book signing and reception will follow.
