James Salter, this year’s recipient of the PEN/Malamud Award, is a gifted short story writer who ended his career in the Air Force after publishing his popular first novel The Hunters, based on more than 100 combat missions in Korea. He has since written numerous collections, novels, and screenplays, in addition to his memoir, Burning the Days. Publishers Weekly deemed him “the author of some of the most esteemed fiction of the past three decades.”
