James W. McManus

James W. McManus is a professor of art history at California State University, Chico, where he has taught for the past 30 years. Specializing in the twentieth century, he has written about Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, and the Dada, Fluxus and Pop art movements. McManus was drawn to this Institute through his work on Duchamp's Large Glass (1915-23), a study demonstrating that the artist's extensive use of imagery and information about geometry, optical theory and practice is drawn from his examination of numerous treatises published between the fifteenth and early twentieth centuries, provides a basis for the fanciful and whimsical optical/photographic apparatus portrayed in the work.
