Steven A. Walton finished
his dissertation on "The Art of Gunnery in Renaissance England"
in 1999 at the University of Toronto and now teaches history of
science and technology at Michigan Technological University (www.social.mtu.edu/faculty/sawalton).
His areas of research stem from the intersection of the history
of science and technology and military history, primarily in the
pre-modern period. His primary research is on early-modern "Military
Gentlemen" who appropriated and marshaled scientific and technical
behaviors in their effort to redefine warfare and social understandings
of the military, but has ranged from the transmission of knowledge
of natural science from antiquity through the middle ages, Dark
Age understanding and practice of metallurgy in northwest Europe
and Arab lands, and early 20th century museum collecting rationale.
