(WASHINGTON, DC) – Folger Consort, the early music ensemble in residence at Folger Shakespeare Library, was honored with the 23rd Annual Washington Area Music Award for Best Classical Chamber Ensemble. Winners were announced at a ceremony at The State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia, on Sunday, February 15.
The awards—affectionately known as the Wammies™—are given annually by the Washington Area Music Association, an umbrella organization of Washington area musicians, concert promoters, lawyers, recording engineers, managers, graphic artists, and related businesses.
Folger Consort’s season of Mediterranean music continues March 13-15 with Mosaic: Medieval Song from Spain and Cyprus. Guest artists include soprano Ann Monoyios and instrumentalists Mary Springfels and Tom Zajac. The season concludes April 17-19 with Don Quixote, featuring music inspired by Cervantes’ classic saga and dramatic readings of the text by Floyd King. Rosa Lamoreaux—Wammie™ award winner for Best Classical Vocal Soloist—and William Sharp are the featured vocalists.
