Celebrated actress Lynn Redgrave returns to Folger Theatre with a new one-woman show, Rachel and Juliet, for five performances only, April 10-12, 2009. Her mother, the glamorous Rachel Kempson, famously made her Stratford debut as Juliet in 1932 and had a stellar career on stage and screen—while with husband Michael Redgrave producing one of the most extraordinary theatrical families of our time. Interweaving remembrances, Ms. Kempson’s own words, and passages from Shakespeare, Ms. Redgrave tells the fascinating story of her mother’s continued love affair with the role of Juliet and the search for her Romeo.
This special Easter weekend production—a special addition to the Folger Theatre season between The Winter's Tale and Arcadia—follows on Ms. Redgrave’s Tony Award-nominated Shakespeare for My Father, which was first seen in early development at the Folger.
Lynn Redgrave was born in London into a family of actors and has enjoyed a four-decade career on stage, screen, and beyond. She is a founding member of The Royal National Theatre and is the author of four plays—Shakespeare for My Father, The Mandrake Root, Nightingale, and Rachel and Juliet. Ms. Redgrave has been nominated for three Tony Awards, two Oscars, two Emmys, and a Grammy. Film highlights include Georgy Girl, Gods and Monsters, Shine, Kinsey, The Jane Austen Book Club, and the upcoming release Confessions of a Shopaholic. Other recent credits include the final Merchant/Ivory production, The White Countess, and ABC’s “Desperate Housewives.” She can be heard in the animated film series of Me, Eloise and in the upcoming animated feature, My Dog Tulip. Ms. Redgrave is a prolific “voice on tape” and her latest audio book release is Roald Dahl's The Witches. She was recently seen Off-Broadway in Grace at MCC Theater and as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest at Paper Mill Playhouse.
