| These awe-inspiring chess pieces celebrate a group of artists, entertainers, and actors living in London in Elizabethan times. The king is a playwright and the queen, bishops, and knights are performers at the Globe. Books, manuscripts, folios, and feather quills decorate the chess pieces alongside the swirling fabric curtains of the theater and the well-trodden boards of the stage. Designed in England, this set is unusual in having different pawns for each side. The dark pawns represent Shakespeare's tragedies with Yorick's skull. The light pawns represent life, flowers, and love sonnets. King height 5 1/4". All pieces are finished in either a traditional brown and cream appearance or hand-painted with painstaking detail; available with or without folding board. Board: Walnut and sycamore veneers. Square size 2" (50mm). Open size 17 1/4" (44cm). |
