Folger invites teachers and their students from across the DC Metro area to perform their 25-minute interpretations of Shakespeare's plays. The students help edit, direct, and craft a piece, then perform in front of an audience of their peers in a day-long festival that celebrates Shakespeare's language, his plays, and the students' achievements mastering his work.
Secondary Shakespeare School Festival
Our annual Secondary School Shakespeare Festival for students in grades 7–12 is open to schools in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Students come to the Folger for a full day and perform pieces they’ve created using Shakespeare’s text. Throughout the day students engage with their peers, participate in language activities, and perform, after which they receive supportive feedback from selected commentators after performing on the Folger stage.
Every spring, hundreds of students in grades 3–6 perform Shakespeare for one another on the Folger stage. The Emily Jordan Folger Children's Shakespeare Festival, which is open to schools in the DC, Virginia, and Maryland area, features fun activities for all, great student performances, wild applause from parents and fans, and guests visiting from Shakespeare’s time.
