How to Apply

The application period for Teaching Shakespeare 2016 is closed. Applicants who are accepted into the program will be notified by March 31st.

The Folger Shakespeare Library aims to bring together a dynamic, diverse community of learners and teachers, ready to learn deeply and collaborate mightily. If you have high energy for Shakespeare, for learning in multiple ways, if you are always looking for ways to improve your teaching and your students' learning, if you are experienced in or have an appetite for diving into Shakespeare, and into the ways that great teaching can transform learning, please consider applying.

For more information on eligibility, please view the NEH's eligibility criteria list.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the NEH cover sheet (for more details, see below). Your application will be considered incomplete if you do not fill this out.
  2. Write us an essay—no more than four double-spaced pages—and tell us: why you are applying; your interest in what we’ll be studying; why you are equipped to do the work of the institute and to make a contribution to a learning community; and what you want to accomplish by participating.

  3. Contact two people to provide your letters of support. One must be a student, while the other must be either your department head or principal. These letters of support must be emailed by the letter-writers directly to by March 1, 2016.

  4. Complete the Folger’s online application by filling out the form, uploading your essay and your resumé to the form, and submitting it to the Folger no later than March 1, 2016. You will also be prompted to provide the names and email addresses of both your student and supervisor on the application form.

Successful applicants will be notified of their selection on March 31, 2016.

NEH Cover Sheet Guidelines

The NEH application cover sheet must be filled out online. Please follow the prompts and click “submit.” At this point you will be asked if you want to fill out a cover sheet for another project. If you wish to do so, follow the prompts to select another project and repeat the process.

Note that filling out a cover sheet is not the same as applying, so there is no penalty for changing your mind or filling out a cover sheet for several projects.  A full application consists of the items listed above, as sent to the project director.

You must submit a separate cover sheet online for each project to which you are applying in order to generate a unique tracking number for each application. Do not copy and paste a new cover sheet.
