Detail Mrs. Folger

In this portrait by the fashionable British painter Frank Salisbury (1874–1962), Emily Jordan Folger wears her Vassar robe and hood representing her master’s degree. A Vassar graduate, she earned an M.A. from the college after her marriage for a thesis on “The True Text of Shakespeare.” The antique fan she holds is painted with a scene from Shakespeare’s play Cymbeline.

The Folgers commissioned this portrait and one of Henry Folger from Salisbury for their planned library. The paintings were received in March 1927 and have hung in the Folger Library since its founding in 1932.
