Shakespeare Steps Out

Shakespeare Steps Out brings Shakespeare to teachers and students in grades 3 to 6 in selected public schools. 

 

 


Through the use of visual and creative arts, history, and language arts, our teaching artists help students of all learning styles and multiple intelligences find their own points of entry into Shakespeare's language and plays.

 

The program culminates in the students participating in the Children's Shakespeare Festival on the Folger stage with other schools from throughout the Washington area.


The Shakespeare Steps Out program includes:

  • nine interactive, standards-based classroom visits

    Led by Folger Teaching Artists, the first three sessions focus on Introducing Shakespeare and the language.

    he remaining six visits are designed to assist teachers as they prepare their students to participate in the festival

  • a stage combat workshop at the Folger

  • a performance and workshop by Bill's Buddies, our educational acting troupe, at your school

In addition, Shakespeare Steps Out offers professional development opportunities for participating teachers. The Folger hosts three workshops on how to integrate theater techniques into other subject areas in conjunction with the Center for Inspired Teaching.


The program—including actor fees, transportation, and related instructional materials—is provided to selected schools at no cost.
