Shakespeare Comes to America

Shakespeare’s final solo play, The Tempest, drew inspiration from William Strachey’s account of the 1609 wreck of the Sea Venture on the coast of Bermuda. Although this report from America provided Shakespeare with source material, he did not become a literary staple in the colonies until the eighteenth century.
