Croquet and Double Entendre



Philotheca Corneliana: Sive Emblematvm Novorvm hortus florentissimus


The drawings and engravings of Peter Rollos the Elder, active in Prague and Berlin during the early 1600s, provided the inspiration for the designs in this emblem book. Rollos is known for the everyday subject matter of his illustrations. In this image, the participants of a croquet game bawdily discuss the importance of the size of the croquet balls.
