Teaching Shakespeare Institute 2008

Please note that as the deadline for applications was March 3, 2008, we are no longer accepting TSI 2008 applications.

Perhaps you'll consider one of our mini-institutes instead?

Completing application materials
  • NEH application cover sheet

Click on the link above and complete.

Please fill out as directed by the prompts.  When finished, be sure to click the “submit” button.

If applying by mail, please print out the cover sheet and add to your application package.

Everyone must complete the cover sheet at the NEH website in order for their application to be considered.

Note that filling out a cover sheet is not the same as applying, so there is no penalty for changing your mind and filling out a cover sheet for more than one NEH summer seminar.

  • Folger TSI Application

Click on the link above and complete.

Please fill out as directed by the prompts.  Make sure to have your résumé and essay ready to upload because everything must be completed and uploaded in one online session; work cannot be saved and then returned to later.

If applying by mail, please print out the cover sheet and add to your application package.

  • Résumé

Please include a résumé detailing your educational qualifications and professional experience.

If applying online, it can be uploaded with your application.

  • The Essay

As stipulated by the instructions, the essay should contain any relevant personal and academic information.

It should address your reasons for applying, and your interest, both academic and personal, in the subject of Shakespeare, as well as the qualifications and experiences that equip you to do the work of the Institute and to make a contribution to our learning community.

It should contain a statement of what you hope to accomplish by participating, and how the work of the Institute relates to your professional responsibilities.

In addition, we are interested in reading about your specific experiences in the classroom, and we ask that you describe a teaching strategy that you attempted but discovered to be a terrible failure, and then describe one that you found to be a complete success.

We are also interested in your ability to respond to a fast-paced academic schedule, and to interact with many new colleagues.

The essay is probably the most important part of your application.

Essay should be no longer than four (4) double-spaced pages.

If applying online, it can be uploaded with your application.

  • Reference Letters

The two referees should be chosen carefully. They should be familiar with the your professional accomplishments or promise, interests, and ability to contribute to and benefit from participation in a community of intellectual inquiry. They should specifically address these issues in their recommendations.

Letters from colleagues who know the applicant's teaching and from those outside the applicant's institution who know the applicant's habits of mind can be particularly useful. Referees should, if possible, be familiar with the work of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the seminars and institutes program. It is helpful for referees to read the description of the project sent by the director and the application essay. If an applicant has previously participated in an NEH summer seminar or institute, a recommendation from the director or lead scholar of that program would be useful.

Please ask each of your referees to sign their name across the seal on the back of the envelope containing their letter, if mailing their reference.

Letter can also be e-mailed directly to us at educate@folger.edu.

Teachers on TSI

"Probably the biggest benefit of TSI isn't curricular, but instead lies in increased enthusiasm and confidence. I take more risks, with Shakespeare and with other things as well."
