Exploring an exhibition

Building and Exhibition Tours

Tour the Folger's historic landmark building with a knowledgable docent, see highlights from our current exhibition, and digitally leaf through one of the Folger's 82 Shakespeare First Folios. A short video explores why Shakespeare matters 400 years later.

Tour our historic Reading Rooms. View paintings from our Shakespeare collection, Nicola d'Ascenzo's stained-glass window inspired by Jacques's "Seven Ages of Man" speech from As You Like It,  a bust of Shakespeare based on his memorial in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford, and sixteenth and seventeenth-century Flemish tapestries.

Elizabethan Garden

  • First and third Saturday of the month, from April through October
    at 10 and 11am
  • Free

Docent-led walks through our Elizabethan Garden, including the plants, design, and Shakespeare-inspired statues by Gregg Wyatt.

Group Tours

Explore our Elizabethan Theatre, Great Hall, and Founders' Room in a docent-led tour of the Folger's national landmark building, our founders, and how the world's largest Shakespeare collection came to make its home in the nation's capital.


Private group tours for groups of 15 or more may be scheduled for a base fee of $100. An additional fee is charged for groups of more than 25. Group size is limited to 50. Group tours must be scheduled in advance.

Exhibition Mobile Tours

Explore our current exhibiton through video and audio interviews with curators and experts, digitally thumb through image galleries, and particpate in interactive polls.



Cell phone audio tours

Go behind the scenes to learn more about the Folger's national landmark buidling, our Elizabeth Garden, and our exhibitions with cell phone audio tours. The tours are free; the only cost is your cell phone minutes.


Ellen Andrus, Folger Docent, offers a tour of the First Folio to visitors.
