Long-term Fellowships Application Guidelines

We've moved. Please look for fellowship information  here.

The application deadline for 2014-15 long-term Fellowships is 1 November 2013. This deadline applies to all components of the application, including the letters of support.

By early September, we will have a new online application process. Until then, all online application links have been cut. Please DO NOT submit a hard copy application in the meantime. For those who intend to apply for a long-term NEH, Mellon, or Folger Fellowship to be taken in the 2014-15 academic year, you may safely anticipate that the following components will still be required to be considered:  a 250-word abstract of your project, a 1,000-word description of your research project, and 4-page curriculum vitae.  Applicants will have the opportunity to include a bibliography of primary sources to be consulted.  Three letters of support complete the application. The new online application process will require referees to submit their letters via the application portal.

Potential applicants are always encouraged to contact Fellowships Administrator Carol Brobeck with any questions about the process of applying for or holding a Fellowship. What follows is the kind of general information potential applicants receive in advance of making an application.

The Folger currently receives between 60 and 70 applications for the five long-term Fellowships.

The proposed research should be relevant to Folger collections. Proposal narratives should indicate which Folger primary sources are critical to the proposed research.

The Folger has only rarely awarded long-term Fellowships for revisions of doctoral dissertations, yet it does not wish to preempt submissions of exciting projects simply because they derive from the dissertation.

Letters of support should not be job or portfolio letters. Successful applicants generally secure letters of support from scholars who know their work, have read the proposal, and can speak to the importance of the proposed project as well as the applicant’s ability to bring the project to completion.

Applicants who are not successful in the Long-term competition are welcome to apply for a short-term Fellowship. Letters of support submitted for the long-term application will be attached to the latter. All other components of the short-term application should be submitted anew.

The Folger is unable to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
