We do our best to create the most exhilarating Festival for as many students as possible. Please remember that schools are invited to participate; no one is ever guaranteed a spot in the Festival. We suggest that you always arrange an alternate venue, i.e., an in-school festival or a performance at a community center. Have a back up—Shakespeare, after all, is terrific wherever he’s performed.
In order to be as fair as possible, we’ve outlined the priorities that we use to accept schools to the Secondary School Shakespeare Festival. Please keep in mind that these are only guidelines; we consider each school individually.
1. DC Public Schools. These schools are the heart of our community. Our first obligation is to serve the students and teachers who live and work next to us.
2. New Schools. Whenever possible, we will not turn down a request from a school that has never attended before.
3. Sit outs. If we ask a school to sit out one year—either for breaking the rules or simply to give new schools the chance to participate—we make every effort to give that school a spot the next year.
4. First-come, first-served. After other categories have been taken into account, we accept registrations in the order in which they are postmarked. We do adjust the schedule for certain factors, including type of school (public, private, or parochial), geographical area (urban, suburban, or rural), and size (large or small). Each Festival day is carefully arranged to ensure a balance of students from all backgrounds.
