Thirteen Charades, chiefly by David Garrick

Thirteen Charades, by David Garrick and others. Manuscript, mid-18th century

The playing of charades among Garrick and his friends is contemporaneous with the first usage of the word in the Oxford English Dictionary, suggesting that they were early adopters of the game. Shown here are 13 clues in verse, mostly written by Garrick, for answers such as “winepress,” “rainbow,” “damsel,” “bedlam,” and “handcuff.”
