Sarah Siddons (1755–1831) officially retired in 1812, but in June 1816, she returned briefly as Lady Macbeth at the request of Princess Charlotte. Siddons did not compare well with Covent Garden’s new leading lady, Eliza O’Neill (1791–1872), as this caricature makes clear.
