Stage designer and portrait artist Yolanda Sonnabend produced this costume design for Derek Jarman’s visceral 1979 film of The Tempest. Sonnabend deliberately mixed aesthetics and eras in her designs to emphasize the timelessness of Shakespeare’s original creation.
She described her costume for Miranda, shown at right, as "heady Hollywood fourteenth century." This conceptual drawing combines watercolor and collage to evoke the haphazard feeling of the finished design.
