Folger Theatre 2011/12 Season Preview

Overflowing with passion, pizzazz, and hard-won love, the plays of Folger Theatre’s 2011/12 season offer a look at the games people play—both the tragic and the light-hearted—Othello’s mistrust of Desdemona, Kate and Petruchio’s uncanny union, and the sparkling dalliances of well-drawn characters in an entertaining hit of 18th-century London.

OTHELLO

by William Shakespeare

directed  by Robert Richmond

October 16 - November 27, 2011

A tragedy of pure jealousy, generated by an act of suspicion, sets the stage for eventual calamity. Othello draws extravagantly from the imagination, behavior, and language of its exotic hero, and, like the title character, stands apart among Shakespeare’s tragedies.

Featuring Owiso Odera as Othello and Ian Merrill Peakes as Iago.

THE GAMING TABLE

by Susanna Centlivre

directed by Eleanor Holdridge

January 24 - March 4, 2012

The thrills of the gaming table stylishly play out against the eccentricities of English manners in this handsome comedy. Lady Reveller, an independent widow with a penchant for gambling, leads a nightly card game, which bankrupts some and entertains all.

Produced as part of the Folger's celebration of women writers, including the exhibition Shakespeare's Sisters.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

by William Shakespeare

directed by Aaron Posner

May 1 - June 10, 2012

Riotous events lead to the seemingly ill-fitting marriage of the arrogant Petruchio and the headstrong Kate. Full of wit and lusty humor, Shakespeare’s quintessential battle of the sexes redefines the boundaries of love.

Featuring real life husband and wife Cody Nickell and Kate Eastwood Norris as Petruchio and Kate.
