Folger Education specializes in programs which get students on their feet with Shakespeare's words at any age!
Shakespeare in Action Workshops for Students are open to anyone in the DC area. Whether you are from across the continent or around the corner, we do our best give your class the perfect Shakespearean experience!
Student Matinees are offered for Folger Theatre productions each year. Students are invited to stay after the show for a Q&A with the actors. Tickets are available through Group Sales: (202) 675-0336.
Bill's Buddies, our educational outreach troupe, performs for grades 3-12 and can be seen in public performances in Folger Theatre, or can be booked to perform at local schools.
Student Festivals are held each year in our Theatre. Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to perform at the Secondary Festival in March, and students in grades 3-6 are welcome to perform in the Children's Festival in May.
Shakespeare Steps Out is a local outreach program for grades 3-6. A Folger Teaching Artist visits a classroom throughout the school year, preparing them to perform in the Children's Festival in May. In addition, students attend a Stage Combat Workshop at the Folger to learn more about stagework and performance.
Shakespeare for a New Generation is a local outreach program for grades 7-12. Similar to SSO, a teaching artist visits the school and prepares students to perform in the Secondary Festival in March. In addition, students are invited to attend a Student Matinee of a play in Folger Theatre, and discuss this play as a class.
Courses for Local High School Students
The High School Fellowship Program is a fall course at the Folger for students in grades 10-12. Fellows from across the DC Metro Area meet once a week at the Folger. Our Fellows dive into our collection of rare Shakespeare materials, attend multiple plays, read, do a little scene work, and discuss all in sessions with scholars, actors, directors, curators, and more. For more information, contact Peggy O'Brien at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Shakespeare's Sisters Poetry Seminar takes place for ten weeks each spring, during which students explore British and American women poets from the mid-16th century to the present and write poetry of their own. No prior experience with writing poetry is necessary. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are invited to apply. More information is available from Folger Poetry: (202) 675-0374.
