Selby Kiffer: The Shakesepeare First Folio at Auction

Collecting the Book That Breaks the Rules

First Folio

First Folios can fetch millions of dollars at auction—the highest sum on record is $6.2 million paid in 2001— even though the book is not considered a particularly rare volume. There's something else about the First Folio that has attracted obsessive book collectors since the eighteenth century. Selby Kiffer, Senior Specialist at Sotheby’s takes listeners inside the rare book auction world and what makes the First Folio so irresistible.

Introduction by Stephen Enniss, Eric Weinmann Librarian, Folger.

Followed by a Q & A.

Listener note: Questions posed in the brief question and answer session following the talk may be difficult to hear; we chose to include this final segment as well, due to the interest and length of the answers.

From the June 23, 2011 summer lecture series in conjunction with the exhibition, Fame, Fortune, and Theft: The Shakespeare First Folio.
