Logistics for Program Participants

Folger Housing and Reservations

The Folger maintains housing with a limited number of apartments and guest-house rooms that are available to scholars conducting research at the Folger. Priority consideration for Folger Guest House rooms is given to program participants with grants-in-aid.

The Folger has recently adopted a new method for making reservations for seminar participants. Reservations will be made online. Please email folger.properties@folger.edu with the dates of your stay.

Please keep in mind that the majority of the rooms in the Guest House allow for double occupancy. Double occupancy in the Folger Guest House allows for double the amount of time spent in the Library, for the same price. Additionally, those willing to participate in double occupancy will be given housing priority. If you are willing to double up, please mention so in your email to Folger Properties. To make a reservation, or for more information, contact Folger Properties at folger.properties@folger.edu or at (202) 675- 0314.

N.B. If you are attending a Folger Institute weekend seminar or conference and have been awarded a grant-in-aid, you will likely be staying at the Capitol Hill Hotel or Phoenix Park Hotel. Check your award letter, or double-check with Elyse Martin (ext. 333), but in most cases, this reservation will be made for you to ensure a special rate.

For information on non-Folger housing options, click here.

In order for the Folger Institute to process your grant-in-aid award, it will be necessary for our Business Office to have your social security number and address on file. A few weeks before the program, the Institute will provide all “U.S. persons” with a W-9 form (“Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification”).

No checks will be issued before this information has been received. You should submit this completed form directly to the Business Office in order to protect your personal information.

Foreign national scholars who do not have a social security number must undergo a slightly more complicated process that begins with the completion of a Foreign National Information Form. Please contact the Institute for more information.

Reader Registration

New Readers: If you are accepted, you should plan on arriving as early as 10:15 a.m. on the first day of the semester to register with the Library's Reader Registrar, Rachael Mueller. To facilitate this process, your letters of recommendation will be forwarded to the Reader Registrar in advance, and the reader registration card mailed to you. Please have the registration card filled out and be sure you have a valid form of government issued ID with you to register.

Registered Readers: Readers' cards are renewable annually. Please contact Rachael Mueller directly at 202.675.0306 if you have any questions about the status of your registration.

On Your First Day...

At 11:00 a.m. on the first day of the program, the reading room staff will offer a brief walking tour of the library, introducing new readers to the Folger Shakespeare Library and its policies.

If you want to spend more time in the reading room on your first day, either doing work or acclimating yourself to the Folger, you can arrive and register as early at 8:45 a.m., when the reading rooms open. Click here to see the Folger's regular hours and yearly closings.
