“Urban Community and the Printing House: The Case of Basel”
Anthony Grafton, Princeton University
This paper will examine some of the ways in which members of different social orders, nationalities, genders, and religious affiliations met and worked together in printing houses. It will focus on strategies—specifically those of authors, master printers and workers—and networks. Other cities will come into discussion for comparison, but the paper will focus on Basel, the great river city, so well placed to be a node on many networks over the long sixteenth century.
