In order to make our K–12 students “college ready” the Common Core Standards demand that we engage our students with complex text. Are modern translations of Shakespeare’s works just as good as Shakespeare’s early modern English words?
Join us for Shakespeare in Other Words: Teaching opportunities that get lost we remove Shakespeare from the reading process.
Shakespeare's plays are more than plots. This session is designed for participating teachers and administrators to take a closer look at specific literary devices that get lost when we use modern translations of Shakespeare's plays in our classrooms. Alliteration, assonance, metaphor, simile, inverted syntax, and imagery fall away when Shakespeare is removed from the reading process. As a result, the Common Core's call for complex text is ignored and we rob our students of words that belong to everyone.
This webinar features a presentation by and discussion with Julia Perlowski, Folger Ambassador and Master Teacher as well as Pompano Beach High School Director of Theatre Programs and English and Reading Instructor.
Discussion facilitated by Robert Young, Director of Folger Education, and Michael LoMonico, Folger's Senior Consultant on National Education, both former high school educators.
