Heavenly Revelations: Hildegard von Bingen and Medieval France

The soaring melodies and ecstatic poetry of Hildegard von Bingen—the 12th-century mystic, nun, and advisor to popes and emperors—are indeed revelatory, heard in the grand space of Washington National Cathedral. This visionary repertoire is paired with contrasting later works—sophisticated motetes and intraicate instrumental music written and performed in the 13th century by the elite of Notre Dame Cathedral and the French court. With period strings and the renowned voices of Anonymous 4.
