Located a block from the US Capitol, the Folger Shakespeare Library—home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection— is famous for the engaging marble bas-reliefs of Shakespeare scenes on its Art Deco facade. Inside, you’ll find yourself transported through time by its warm Renaissance interior of oak paneling, vaulted ceilings, carved wood, and stained-glass windows. The Folger was designed by Philadelphia architect Paul Philippe Cret and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
All rental spaces at the Folger are handicap accessible, and some may be rented together in combination. Site rentals for private events start at $1,500 for smaller rooms and $8,000 for larger rooms and the Elizabethan Theatre.

Main Floor
The Old Reading Room. A vaulted wood ceiling, hand-carved oak galleries, massive stone fireplace, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century tapestries, and stained-glass windows are just some of the features of this remarkable space. Lined with books, it’s used by scholars from around the world.
The Great Hall. Highlights of this spectacular long hall, styled after the gallery of a great English house, include its terra-cotta floor, oak-paneled walls, and 35-foot strapwork ceiling. Changing exhibitions of Folger treasures are displayed here.
The Elizabethan Theatre. An intimate space that suggests an innyard theater from Shakespeare’s day, the Theatre incorporates timber and plaster walls, carved oak columns, and a three-tiered gallery. A sky canopy overhead completes the effect.
The Founders’ Room. Designed as a private space for Henry and Emily Folger, the Founders’ Room offers a unique setting for small meetings or gatherings with its opaque leaded-glass windows, lovely art work, carved paneling, stone fireplace, and antique furniture.
Lower Level
The Board Room. Decorated in an English Regency style with mahogany tables and high-backed chairs, the Board Room combines classic elegance with such modern conveniences as a large retractable screen for slide, film, and computer presentations. To expand your event, consider renting the adjacent Tea Room, renovated in 1999.
