The Folgers Our Founders
Explore the collecting history of founders Henry and Emily Folger through highlights from their early purchases. Shakespearean items include a 1632 Second Folio censored by the Spanish Inquisition, the first known manuscript of a Shakespeare play, and a bracelet braided from the hair of American Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth. The Folgers’ collecting extended beyond Shakespeare to his world; highlights include the first printed edition of Euclid’s Elements and a handwritten letter from Elizabeth I to James IV of Scotland.

Sharing Our Stories
Our 2013 Conference is full of opportunities to explore the way elementary aged students are "doing" Shakespeare!
We have an exciting line up of authors, teachers, scholars and students to help re-boot your study of Shakespeare with your students or kick it into high gear!
This year's conference will include demonstration and lecture based sessions, an exlcusive tour of the Folger Reading Room, a special student performance, roundtable discussions, book signings and a closing reception.

New Bownde, pre–conference workshop: Digitizing bindings with omnimulti–directional lighting (Mini–dome)
This event precedes the international conference New Bownde: New Scholarship in Early Modern Binding.
In this workshop Dr. Lieve Watteeuw (Illuminare, Centre for the Study of Medieval Arts, KU Leuven, Belgium) and Dr. Hendrik Hameeuw (Ancient Near Eastern Studies, KU Leuven, Belgium) will demonstrate the Mini-dome, an innovative digital imaging tool for researching, studying, and exploring material characteristics of library materials produced in medieval and early modern times.
The Mini-dome was originally created for reading cuneiform tablets. The second generation of this devise creates 'digital rubbings', sharp and exact visualizations of bookbinding stamps that are otherwise hard to see. In this workshop, Dr. Watteeuw will demonstrate the device using early modern bindings from the Folger collections (before noon), and process and interpret the images after the lunch break (1:30-4:30).

New Bownde: New Scholarship in Early Modern Binding
The Folger Shakespeare Library hosts a two-day, international conference to explore new tools for the study of English and Continental bookbinding and share new scholarship in the materiality of the book. Fifteen scholars from seven countries present papers on different aspects of bookbindings, and four international experts conduct workshops exploring new tools and instruments for the study of early modern bindings.
New Bownde: New Scholarship in Early Modern Binding marks the culmination of a two-year project to build an online database of binding images from the Folger collection.
The conference is preceded by a unique, free of charge workshop on Wednesday 14 August 2013 about "digital rubbings" of early modern bookbindings.
